Shorthorn Breeding Program
PEHIRI SHORTHORN STUD
The Pehiri Shorthorn Stud has been a supplier of quality shorthorn bulls to the East Coast for over thirty years.
Merran Hain, stud principle had her interest for Shorthorns kindled at a young age due to a strong family interest in the breed. She has always been a keen equestrian, representing New Zealand in Eventing, Show Jumping and Dressage.
In 1972 she married Sid Hain, the owner of Waikura Station and since then she has been a shepherd and stock manager on the farm.
In 1976 Merran realised she could no longer afford to support her equestrian career on her shepherd’s wages alone. She therefore started the Pehiri Shorthorn Stud to supplement her income and improve the quality of the commercial herd on Waikura.
It began with 10 cows from the Matiawa dispersal. The stud has increase in size, mainly internally, but also with purchases from Kai Iwi and Ardmore such that last year there were nearly 100 shorthorn calves were born.
The Shorthorns and Herefords are run together at all times except at joining.
The main sires used at Pehiri currently are Pehiri 2059, Pehiri 061, Belmore Hamersley and Waimai Vagabond.
Our aim here is to produce sound bulls able to survive anything nature throws their way. Our cattle must finish easily and the cows must show easy caving and an ability to get back in calf. All animals are performance recorded, weighed at birth, fat and muscle scanned and all bulls are semen and service capacity tested.
The breeding emphasis is on producing top sires for steep Gisborne hill country, with the motto: Bred in the Hills for the Hills.
We believe that what sets our bulls apart is the strength of the breeding and the challenging environment in which they live.
